Stadtpfarrkirche (parish church)

In 1443 the Viennese master builder Hanns Puchsbaum was commissioned to rebuild the parish church in the late-Gothic style; he died in 1456. The church burned in 1522 and again in 1876, and its neo-Gothic tower was completed in 1889. Its organ, built by Chrismann in 1774–1778, was rebuilt with advice from Anton Bruckner and received a neo-Gothic case in 1893.

On Brucknerplatz, next to the church, stands the Bruckner monument of 1898, with a bust by Victor Tilgner on a base by Fritz Zerritsch. It was removed during the Second World War and put back in September 1945. A plaque of 1908 marks the Alter Pfarrhof, where Bruckner spent his summers.

Michaelerkirche

The twin-towered Baroque church on Michaelerplatz was built between 1635 and 1677 and looks across the river Steyr to the Stadtplatz. The fresco on its gable shows Saint Michael and the fall of the rebel angels.

The former Dominican church at Stadtplatz 41 dates from a Dominican foundation of the late 15th century. It was rebuilt in the early Baroque style in the mid-17th century and has a Rococo interior.

Christkindl pilgrimage church

On the edge of town, the Baroque church of Christkindl gave its name to the famous Christmas post office. Read about Christkindl.
