Franz Schubert and the Trout Quintet
Franz Schubert came to Steyr in 1819, 1823 and 1825, staying in the house at Stadtplatz 16 now known as the Schuberthaus. His host and patron in 1819 was Sylvester Paumgartner, a Steyr music lover and amateur cellist. Paumgartner commissioned a piano quintet and suggested that it include variations on Schubert’s song “Die Forelle” (The Trout): the result is the Trout Quintet, one of the best-loved works of chamber music.
Anton Bruckner’s summers
From 1884 Anton Bruckner spent his summers in Steyr, living in the Alter Pfarrhof beside the parish church. He worked here on his Eighth and Ninth Symphonies between 1886 and 1894, and advised on the rebuilding of the church organ. A monument with his bust by Victor Tilgner was unveiled on Brucknerplatz in 1898.
Marlen Haushofer
The writer Marlen Haushofer (1920–1970), author of the novel Die Wand (The Wall, 1963), lived in Steyr. Since 2002 the town library, opened in 1962 in the former Hotel Nagl on Bahnhofstraße, has carried her name: the Stadtbücherei Marlen Haushofer.
