Cross the bridge from the Stadtplatz and climb past the Michaelerkirche: you are in Steyrdorf, the old district of Steyr. Josef Werndl, the industrialist who would make Steyr one of the great arms-making towns of Europe, was born here in 1831.
What to see in Steyrdorf
- Dunklhof: a 15th-century house with 16th-century arcades.
- Lebzelterhaus: built around 1600, now the Christkindl Café with a small gingerbread museum.
- Roter Brunnen: the fountain in Gleinker Gasse, at the end of Kirchengasse, named after its former copper roof and topped by an 18th-century statue of Mary.
- Innerberger Stadel: the granary of 1612/13 on the Grünmarkt, today the city museum. More.
The Wehrgraben
Along the river Steyr, the Wehrgraben is where Steyr’s industrial past is most visible. Its restored mid-19th-century factory buildings house the Museum Arbeitswelt, opened in 1987, and the Steyr campus of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria at Wehrgrabengasse 1.
